Our Approach to Psychiatric Care

There is a saying in medicine: if you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. It's a reminder not to overlook the most common explanation while searching for the rare one.

We believe there is wisdom in that approach. We also believe good psychiatry requires knowing when to keep asking questions.

Psychiatry Is Like Detective Work

One of the things that drew both of us to psychiatry is that people are rarely as simple as a diagnosis or a list of symptoms. Two individuals can describe nearly identical experiences and still arrive at completely different treatment plans, because their stories, histories, medical conditions, relationships, and goals are different.

That's why we often think about psychiatry like detective work — not because every answer is hidden or mysterious, but because good psychiatric care begins with curiosity. It means taking the time to understand the whole picture before deciding what comes next. Sometimes the answer is exactly what we expected. Other times, the symptoms that first brought someone to us are only one piece of a much larger story.

Thoughtful Questions, Not Just Prescriptions

We believe thoughtful questions are often just as important as an effective prescription.

Medication can be life-changing, and for many people it plays an essential role in recovery. At the same time, medication is only one tool among many. We never want treatment to become a cycle of simply adding another prescription whenever life becomes more difficult.

Instead, our goal is to understand why someone is struggling before deciding how we should help. Sometimes that means discussing lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress, or relationships. Sometimes it means coordinating care with a therapist or another healthcare professional. Sometimes it means reviewing previous records, considering laboratory testing, or discussing whether pharmacogenetic testing may offer additional insight. And sometimes it means recognizing that the best decision is not to start another medication at all.

When medication is appropriate, we believe it should be prescribed thoughtfully — using the fewest medications necessary, at the lowest effective doses, while continually evaluating whether each one is providing meaningful benefit. Good care isn't measured by how many prescriptions someone leaves with. It's measured by whether that person is moving closer to the life they want to live.

You'll Always Understand the "Why"

We believe patients deserve to understand the reasoning behind every recommendation we make.

We never want someone leaving an appointment knowing only what medication to take or when to schedule a follow-up. We want them to understand what we believe we're treating, why a particular approach makes sense, what alternatives exist, and what factors we considered together before arriving at that decision.

Psychiatric care should never feel like something being done to you. It should feel like something we're working through together with you.

The Question That Guides Our Care

Those principles don't just guide our treatment decisions — they guide our practice. They influence how we communicate, how we use technology, how we design our policies, and how we think about every interaction someone has with Astra Psychiatry.

Whenever we're faced with an important decision, we come back to the same simple question:

"If we were the patients, would this decision improve their experience?"

That question usually makes the right path clear. And when we work together, we hope you'll agree.
